Staffing firm owner gets two years in prison

October 11, 2010

The former owner of a Providence RI-based staffing firm was sentenced Thursday to 24 months in prison, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Rhode Island reported.

Cheang Chea, owner of S&P Temporary Help Service Inc., under-reported wages and failed to pay millions in federal withholding, Social Security and Medicare taxes, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

In addition to the prison time, Cheang was also ordered to pay $14 million in workers' taxes that he failed to submit, according to the office.

S&P Temporary Help Services supplied workers to 30 Rhode Island companies, and its workforce was made up primarily of immigrants who did not speak English, according to the office.

Chea pleaded guilty in June.
