Staffing firm fined in death of worker

A Canadian court fined a staffing firm C$40,000 (US$34,608) and an automotive stamping company C$120,000 (US$103,824) on Nov. 6 in a case involving the death of a worker, the Ontario Ministry of Labour reported. Toronto Personnel Inc., doing business as Winters Technical Staffing, and Cam Tool and Die Ltd. "failed, as employers, to provide information, instruction and supervision to a worker to protect the health or safety of the worker," according to the ministry.

The worker was dispatched as a general laborer to work on a power press on Nov. 22, 2006, according to the ministry. The worker was between the machine's safety sensor and its pressing mechanism when another worker activated the machine and the person was crushed.
