Spherion index edges down

Spherion Corp.'s (NYSE: SFN) employee confidence index edged down in October -- falling one point to a reading of 48.4.

According to the index's survey, the percentage of U.S. workers who believe the economy is getting stronger fell to 23% in October, down four percentage points from September. However, the number of workers reporting confidence in the future of their current employers rose by one percentage point to 64% in October.

"Our latest employee confidence index suggests that workers remained concerned about the economy and job market as a whole," Spherion President and CEO Roy Krause said. "Although economic indicators seem to be pointing in a better direction, confidence levels are likely to bounce around a bit until workers see more definitive signs of a turnaround- such as positive job growth."

The index's survey questioned 3,375 employed adults in the U.S.
