Spherion index - Worker confidence slips

July 07, 2008

Worker confidence edged down in June, according to the Spherion Corp. (NYSE: SFN) employee confidence index. The measure fell 0.8 points to 46.1.

The number of workers in the index's survey reporting confidence in the future of their employers fell one point to 63% in June. And the number of workers reporting confidence in their ability to find a new job fell two percentage points to 49%.

Only 12% of workers said the economy was getting stronger in June, unchanged from the prior month.

Spherion President and CEO Roy Krause said despite the loss of jobs in the U.S. some sectors continue to hire. And now is not the time for employers to ease up on attracting, developing and retaining talent. "Those who choose to 'take their foot off of the gas,' even in these times, may severely hamper their ability to win the battle for talent now and in the future," Krause said.
