Spherion employee confidence index rises

The Spherion Corp. (NYSE: SFN) employee confidence index rose one point in January to a reading of 50.1 as more workers were optimistic about the strength of the economy and job availability.

"I am pleased with the slight uptick in worker confidence this month," Spherion President and CEO Roy Krause said in a statement. "It aligns with encouraging signs from our customers. Many expect a better year in 2010 but remain somewhat conservative in their hiring plans, waiting for positive job creation."

Twenty-eight percent of U.S. workers believed the economy was getting stronger in January, up four percentage points from December, according to the index's survey. And 62% of workers believed fewer jobs were available in January, a drop of six percentage points from December.

However, fewer workers were confident in the future of their employer -- fall three percentage points to 61% in January.

The index's survey questioned 1,096 employed adults in the U.S.
