Southern California area posts highest jobless rate

The Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario area in Southern California posted the highest unemployment rates in August — 8.7 percent — among all large metropolitan areas with populations of 1 million or more, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

The lowest jobless rate among large metropolitan areas in August was found in Minneapolis-St. Paul at 3.8 percent.

Among metropolitan areas of all sizes, Yuma, Ariz., posted the highest jobless rate in August at 28.0 percent, followed by El Centro, Calif., at 25.1 percent. Bismarck, N.D., posted the lowest jobless rate among metropolitan areas of all sizes at 2.2 percent.
