South Dakota posts lowest jobless for ninth month

South Dakota — as it has since December 2007 — posted the lowest unemployment rate among states at 3.3% in August, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Nebraska registered the next-lowest rate at 3.5%.

Michigan again reported the highest jobless rate among states in August at 8.9%. It was followed by Rhode Island at 8.5%.

Six states had unemployment rates of more than 7.0%: California and Mississippi at 7.7% each, South Carolina at 7.6%, Ohio at 7.4%, Illinois at 7.3% and Nevada at 7.1%.

Year-over-year, 47 states and the District of Columbia reported higher jobless rates, three reported lower rates.
