South Africa – Temporary jobs boosting employment

10 July 2014

There were an additional 26,090 job across South Africa in June, compared with the previous month, according to the latest figures from South Africa’s largest staffing firm, Adcorp. The growth stemmed from a +4.3% increase if temporary work and a +4.8% increase in agency work. Compared with last month, permanent job numbers remained stagnant.

Temporary work now accounts for just under a third (31.1%) of all jobs in the formal sector, with agency work accounting for 25.4% of temporary jobs.

Informal employment witnessed growth of +2.3% during June, the sector now employs an estimated 6.5 million people. The public sector also created jobs during the month; with 11,000 in government and 7,000 in state-owned enterprises. Jobs were created across the majority of occupations, with the exception of so-called ‘basic work’, i.e. elementary and domestic workers.

Significant job losses, however, were observed in mining (2,000), manufacturing (15,000), and construction (1,000).
