Singapore - Employment Agency fined after overcharging foreign workers

25 November 2015

Singapore-based employment agency Career Central, Pte Ltd, was fined SGD 6,000 (USD 4,157) today after pleading guilty to collecting excessive agency fees from foreign employees.

According to the Ministry of Manpower, the two foreign workers had approached Career Central Pte Ltd for job opportunities on November 2013 and October 2014 and were instructed to pay various non-prescribed fees such as administrative fees and resume marketing fees even before their job placements.

The foreign employees each paid agency fees of SGD 7,519 (USD 5,209) and SGD 7,919 (USD 5,486), which totaled more than two months of their salary. Career Central’s license is under review but as of now remains suspended. Under the Employment Agencies Act (EAA), Employment Agencies are not allowed to charge their clients agency fees exceeding two months of their monthly salary.
