View All NewsSingapore – Dozens arrested in illegal foreign worker scam
Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has arrested 41 people in an island-wide enforcement operation against a group suspected of illegally bringing foreign workers into the country, reports channelnewsasia.com.
Investigations revealed that the group would set up shell companies to bring in the foreign workers. They would also collect large sums of money from the workers to obtain genuine work passes.
If convicted, those arrested face between six months and two years of jail, and/or a fine of up to SGD 6,000 (USD 4,440) for each illegal worker, the ministry said. If convicted of at least six similar offences, they also face corporal punishment in the form of a caning.
Employers who hire illegal foreign workers face a fine of between SGD 5,000 (USD 3,700) and SGD 30,000 (USD 22,200), and/or up to 12 months’ jail. They may also be barred from employing foreign workers. Foreigners who work without valid work passes face a fine of up to SGD 20,000 (USD 14,800), and/or 24 months’ jail, and may also be barred from working in Singapore.
