Service sector returns to growth

The service sector began to expand again in April after three months of contraction, according to the Institute for Supply Management's nonmanufacturing index released today. The index rose to 52.0 in April from 49.6 in March. Index readings above 50 indicate growth.

Employment in the service sector also began expanding in April after several months of contraction. The employment portion of the index rose to 50.8 in April from 46.9 in March.

The report is based on a survey of purchasing and supply executives across the country.
