August 04, 2010

Economic activity in the U.S. service sector expanded at a faster rate in July than in June, according to the Institute for Supply Management's nonmanufacturing index.

The index rose to a reading of 54.3 in July from 53.8 in June. Readings of more than 50 generally indicate expansion.

Reuters reported July's reading beat the median forecast of 53.0 from economists it surveyed.

The employment portion of the index swung back to growth in July with a reading of 50.9 after posting a reading of 49.7 in June.
