SHRM: January Hiring to Rise

Hiring in both the manufacturing and service sectors will increase in January compared to the same month last year, according to the leading indicators of national employment report released today by the Society for Human Resource Management.

The report’s survey found that 42.2 percent of manufacturing firms plan to hire in January while 11.0 percent plan to reduce their workforces for a net increase of 31.2 percent. That compares to a net increase of 25.2 percent in January 2012 and is a four-year high hiring rate for the month of January.

In addition, a net of 21.4 percent of service-sector companies will add jobs in January. That compares to a net increase of 6.1 percent in January 2012.

Data for this report is collected through a monthly survey of human resource executives at more than 500 manufacturing and 500 service-sector firms. View the survey page at the SHRM website here.
