Rhode Island metro posts highest jobless rate

The Providence-Fall River-Warwick area in Rhode Island and Massachusetts posted the highest unemployment rate in February, 9.7 percent, among all large metropolitan areas with populations of 1 million or more, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

The New Orleans-Metairie-Kenner area in Louisiana posted the lowest jobless rate among large metropolitan areas at 4.2 percent.

Among metropolitan areas of all sizes, the Yuma, Ariz., area posted the highest jobless rate at 22.9 percent in February. El Centro, Calif., followed with an unemployment rate of 21.0 percent. Louisiana’s Houma-Bayou Cane-Thibodaux area posted the lowest unemployment rate at 2.8 percent.
