The United States added 10,000 private-sector nonfarm jobs in April, on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to the national employment report released today by Automatic Data Processing Inc. (NYSE: ADP). The report, however, revised down its count of jobs gained in March to 3,000 from 8,000.

Employment in the service sector rose by 64,000, according to the report. But employment in the goods-producing sector fell by 54,000.

Employment in construction fell by 28,000 while employment in the financial sector rose by just 2,000. Both areas were hit hard by the subprime mortgage crisis.

The report is based on data from ADP derived from an anonymous subset of roughly 500,000 U.S. business clients.
