Employment in the U.S. oil and gas industry rose by 7 percent, or 64,800, to more than 971,200 in 2012 from 2011, according to the Texas Independent Producers & Royalty Owners Association’s State of Energy Report based on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistic’s Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages Series.

The industry paid a national annualized average wage of $107,200 in 2012, up nearly 5 percent from $102,200 in 2011, adjusted for inflation. California reported the highest oil and gas wages with an average annualized wage of $143,700, followed by Texas at $128,100.

Texas led the nation in oil and gas jobs, with more than 379,800 people employed by the industry. This represents 39 percent of all oil and gas jobs nationwide in 2012 and 4.3 percent of total employment in the state of Texas.

The top-five states for oil and gas employment include:

1. Texas: 379,800 jobs
2. Louisiana: 81,400 jobs
3. Oklahoma: 74,600 jobs
4. California: 46,400 jobs
5.  Pennsylvania: 34,900 jobs
