Report - Google cuts temps, number unclear

January 08, 2009

A news report said online search giant Google Inc. reported cutting a "substantial" amount of its temporary workers and contractors, but the exact number remains unclear.

Google announced the cuts in a Dec. 16 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and said it now has 4,300 interns, temporary workers and contractors among its 24,400 employees, The Associated Press reported.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin told the San Jose Mercury News newspaper in October that it had approximately 10,000 contractors, according to the AP report. However, the difference between the 10,000 number and the 4,300 intern, temporary workers and contractors listed in the SEC filing does not represent the amount of temporary workers cut, a Google spokeswoman told the AP.
