Manufacturing and service-sector industries plan to add more staff than they cut in September, but hiring will be at a slower pace than the same period a year ago, according to the leading indicators of national employment report released by the Society for Human Resource Management.

A survey for the report found 33.0% of manufacturing employers plan to hire in September while 19.2% plan to cut staff for a net 13.8% planning to hire versus cut. When asked their plans last year for September 2008, the net was 24.1%.

In the service sector, a net 22.8% of employers plan to add staff this month compared with a net 31.3% in September 2008.

The SHRM report is based on a survey of private-sector human resource professionals at more than 500 manufacturing and more than 500 service-sector companies.
