Report: Demand jumps for emergency doctors

August 27, 2010

Demand for emergency medicine physicians has jumped over the past year, according to "The Physician Recruiting Standard" report from The Delta Companies, a Dallas-based healthcare staffing firm.

Among specialties in demand, emergency medicine physicians jumped to second place in the second quarter of this year among the top 15 most requested physician searches from No. 14 in the second quarter of 2009.

"Emergency rooms continue to experience an influx of uninsured patients as a result of high unemployment," Todd Turrentine, team lead of Delta Physician Placement said.

The physician specialty most in demand in the second quarter was family medicine; it also topped the list in the second quarter of 2009.

Average starting compensation for emergency medicine physicians from July 2009 through June 2010 was $249,602, according to the report.
