Real average weekly earnings fall by 0.4%

Real average weekly earnings fell by 0.4% month-over-month in May, according to preliminary, seasonally adjusted data released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. A 0.3% increase in average hourly earnings partially offset a 0.7% increase in the consumer price index for urban wage earners and clerical workers.

Average weekly earnings were $601.10 in May before seasonal adjustment and inflation, compared with $583.01 a year earlier.
