Province halts employment agency

January 17, 2008
The government of Alberta ordered an unlicensed employment agency to stop operating in the province and end efforts to collect recruitment and placement fees from workers it has placed. The Woodbridge, Ontario company, WorldWide Workforce, is owned by Rupinder Pal Singh.

Service Alberta, a government agency, said it interviewed seven men recruited by WorldWide Workforce for jobs as trades people in Alberta and they said they were charged a fee of C$18,000 (US$17,631) to come to Alberta in addition to paying travel costs. Alberta law requires employment agencies in the province to be licensed. The law also prohibits employment agencies from charging workers for connecting them with jobs.
