Print help-wanted ads decline

November 29, 2007
The Conference Board's index measuring job ads in U.S. newspapers fell one point in October and now stands at 23. It was 29 during the same period last year. Help-wanted advertising fell in all nine U.S. regions in the past three months. The largest declines happened in the Pacific (down 18.0%), West North Central (down 14.7%), and East North Central (down 14.3%) regions.

"The slump on home buying and building, higher gas prices, higher grocery prices, and credit availability questions are combining to slow the economy," said Ken Goldstein, labor economist at The Conference Board. "Perhaps the only good news is that the forward indicators of labor market activity are more flat than declining. This suggests the slow pace of the labor market this autumn could continue into the early months of 2008."
