Physician executive compensation up 7%, survey finds

November 15, 2013

Median compensation for physician executives grew an average of 7 percent between 2010 and 2012 to $325,000, according to the Cejka Executive Search and American College of Physician Executives 2013 Physician Executive Compensation Survey. The compensation growth rate is up only slightly from last year’s survey, which reported a 6 percent growth rate from 2008 to 2010.

“The survey delivered strong indicators that pay will continue to depend on organizational performance, scope of responsibility and attainment of a post-graduate management degree,” said Cejka Search President Lori Schutte.

In the C-suite, CEOs reported the smallest two-year gain at 4 percent, perhaps reflecting the reliance of their pay packages on organizational financial performance during an economically and politically uncertain period.

CEOs of regional organizations serving multiple sites earned 16 percent above median.

CEOs with a master’s degree in business administration in addition to a medical degree earned 28 percent higher compensation than those without a post-graduate business management degree.

The emailed survey was conducted in June 2013 and included 2,364 physician executives.
