Part-time work steadies Canadian job count

Canadian employment was relatively unchanged in June compared with May. The number of people employed decreased by 7,400 to approximately 16.8 million, Statistics Canada reported today. Full-time employment fell by 47,500 jobs in June, but part-time employment rose by 40,100.

Canada's unemployment rate edged up to 8.6% in June from 8.4% in May.

Manufacturing employment fell by 25,700 jobs in June for total employment in that industry of almost 1.8 million.

In Ontario, employment was also relatively unchanged, rising by 1,200 jobs in June to almost 6.5 million people employed. Ontario added 57,400 part-time jobs, but lost 56,200 full-time jobs. Ontario's unemployment rate rose to 9.6% from 9.4%.

Several other provinces lost part-time jobs, including British Columbia, which lost 16,200 part-time jobs, and Quebec, which lost 7,600 part-time jobs. However, British Columbia gained 12,000 full-time jobs and Quebec added 3,000 full-time jobs.

Saskatchewan posted the lowest unemployment rate among all provinces at 4.6%.
