Online job ads spike in September, 'first optimistic sign'

October 02, 2013

The number of online job ads in the U.S. posted its biggest increase in September since the start of the year , according to The Conference Board's report on online job ads released today. “The 210,000 gain for September is the first optimistic sign this year that employers are seeking additional workers,” said June Shelp, vice president of The Conference Board.

U.S. online job ads rose by 209,700 during September to a total of approximately 5.18 million, according to The Conference Board.

September's increase brings the average monthly gain to 68,000 jobs in the third quarter. This follows an average monthly gain of 27,000 jobs in the second quarter and an average monthly loss of 26,000 jobs in the first quarter.

A separate measure of online job ads released this week by job board Simply Hired reported that online job postings in the U.S. rose by 6.9 percent in September compared to August. Simply Hired's data is based on job openings listed on its site simplyhired.com.

“Our September data shows that job growth remains strong as we move into fall,” said James Beriker, president and CEO of Simply Hired. “This is a very positive signal that the recovery is across geographies and segments- and not isolated in specific regions or job segments.”

Non-profit and construction were among the top industries in terms of job growth, while healthcare continued to count the most available job openings.
