Online job ads rise at slowest rate in years

January 02, 2008
The number of U.S. jobs posted online rose 5.9% year-over-year in December to 3.5 million, according to The Conference Board's online help-wanted advertising survey. That's the smallest year-over-year increase since tracking began in May 2005 and down 13% month-over-month.

New online ads — those which didn't appear in the previous month — rose 9.7% year-over-year in December to 2.3 million. However, new ads were down 17.9% month-over-month.

The Conference Board noted a trend in recent months of year-over-year increases slowing. "These data suggest that the slow pace in the labor market will continue in the months ahead and is likely to extend into the spring of 2008," said Gad Levanon, economist at The Conference Board.
