Online job ads decline

January 30, 2008

The number of U.S. jobs posted online fell 5% month-over-month in January to approximately 3.4 million, according to The Conference Board's online help-wanted advertising survey. Year-over-year the number of ads rose 7%, one of the smallest increases since The Conference Board began measuring online ads in May 2005.

New online ads — those which didn't appear in the previous month — fell 3.7% to approximately 2.2 million in January from December. Still, new ads were up 11.8% compared with January 2007.

"Job seekers may have to pound the pavement a bit harder to find the right job," said Gad Levanon, economist at The Conference Board. "This data suggests that the slow pace of labor demand will continue in the months ahead and may even slow further."
