Uber to get lion's share of on-demand IC revenue estimate of $18.5 billion

June 02, 2015

On-demand economy firms that connect users with independent contractors for household or transportation services will generate $18.5 billion in revenue in 2015, or 3.9% of their total addressable market, according to estimates by BIA/Kelsey, a consulting firm based in Chantilly, Va. Much of that revenue will captured by Uber with $10 billion in ride revenue (including drivers' share).

The platforms have a total addressable market of up to $465 billion in 2015, according to BIA/Kelsey. The addressable market includes people who can conveniently access and afford to pay for in-home on-demand services, including shopping time, travel and child/elder care, which represents 22.8 billion hours of currently unpaid household work, according to BIA/Kelsey. If fully engaged at $17 per hour (the average hourly rate for 1099 work, the firm reports), the total addressable market adds to the $465 billion. The revenue share of the addressable market for the on-demand marketplace operators who connect customers and contractors is approximately $93 billion based on a 20% share for the platform operators.

BIA/Kelsey expects the local on-demand economy to grow at a compound rate of 13.5% through 2030.
