November hiring in US at highest level in four years, HR group says

November 06, 2014

Hiring activity will reach four-year highs for the month of November in both the US manufacturing and service sectors, according to the leading indicators of a national employment report released today by the Society for Human Resource Management. Hiring expectations in US manufacturing are up for the eighth straight month in November, and service-sector hiring expectations are up for the sixth time in seven months.

The report’s survey found that 50.0 percent of manufacturing companies plan to hire in November while 8.0 percent plan to reduce their workforces for a net increase of 42.0 percent, up from a net increase of 40.4 percent in November 2013.

Among service-sector employers, 45.4 percent plan to add staff in November and 8.4 percent plan to cut their workforces for a net increase of 37.0 percent, up from a net increase of 34.1 percent in November 2013.

“The positive trend in employment expectations is undoubtedly the reason for the rise in recruiting difficulty for key positions,” said Jennifer Schramm, manager of workforce trends at SHRM.
