Nigeria – Brunel withdraws amid persistent atmosphere of corruption

26 August 2015

Jan Arie van Barneveld, CEO of Dutch staffing firm Brunel International, said in an interview with Dutch newspaper Financieele Dagblad (FD), that it had become virtually impossible to do business in Nigeria without breaking the rules, reports nos.nl.

The company provides trained workers in companies mainly in the oil & gas sector. However, a persistent atmosphere of corruption and bribery has prompted the company, which achieved sales of approximately €100 million in recent years in Nigeria, to depart.

Mr van Barneveld told the FD: “I don’t want to seem more Catholic than the Pope, but it is virtually impossible to do business without infringing the rules and putting our people in physical danger, then it’s the end of the story.”
