June 04, 2015

Moonlighting, an on online platform to connect people with tasks through a mobile app, received a strategic investment from The McClatchy Company, publisher of the Miami Herald, The Kansas City Star, The Sacramento (Calif.) Bee and other newspapers.

The amount of this investment was not disclosed. However, privately held Moonlighting counts more than 20 investors and has raised $1.9 million so far.

McClatchy’s investment will help support Moonlighting’s product expansion and market development as well as expand its current presence in 1,300 communities to more than 2,000 communities nationwide.

“Moonlighting’s mission is to democratize the sharing economy and allow everyone, everywhere to generate job opportunities on their own terms,” said Moonlighting founder and CEO Jeff Tennery. “With McClatchy’s financial and strategic marketing support, we can accelerate our message to millions of eager workers who need an open, on-demand solution to support their families and generate income.”

The gig economy platform allows users to post jobs and share with friends on social networks such as Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn. Moonlighting is based in Charlottesville, Va.

McClatchy’s VP of interactive media, Christian Hendricks, will join Moonlighting’s board.

“McClatchy has a history of successfully identifying and partnering with emerging digital companies it believes beneficial to its reader and advertising customers,” Hendricks said. “We’re very excited to partner with Moonlighting and believe they have the winning formula to bring a compelling and effective long-term solution for the 1099 sharing economy to service provider and consumers at large.”

McClatchy also has a 15% ownership stake in CareerBuilder.
