New Zealand – Job market for skilled workers improving

17 December 2014

The outlook for skilled workers is brighter across most business sectors and across most of New Zealand, especially the south of the South Island, Bay of Plenty, and Auckland, according to the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment (MBIE), reports stuff.co.nz

Advertised vacancies for skilled jobs were up by +1% in November compared with October 2014, and up by +7.8% in the past year to November, according to the Jobs Online report from MBIE.

The growth in jobs advertised online was seen across most industries.

The Accounting, Human Resources, Legal, and Administration industries had the largest monthly rise, up by +1.3%, closely followed by Healthcare, Medical & Hospitality, and Tourism, both up +1.2%.

Job adverts were up in most in Otago/Southland (up by +17.5%), Bay of Plenty (+17.2%), Auckland (+11.5%), and Canterbury (+10%).

The Ministry's Labour Market and Business Performance Manager David Paterson said the results show continued strength in the labour market.

The unemployment rate has fallen to 5.4% this year, from a peak of more than 7% in 2012. Job numbers have boomed in the past couple of years, with job numbers up by +3.2% in the past year alone.
