The state of New York raised penalties for employers who retaliate against workers who report labor violations to the state Department of Labor.

A new state law that went into effect last week raised the minimum civil penalty to $2,000 from $200 and the maximum penalty to $10,000 from $1,000, the Department of Labor announced.

Retaliatory acts can include firing, demotion, cutting pay or reassignment to a less desirable work shift or duties, according to the department.
