New Orleans posts lowest jobless rate in March

The New Orleans area reported the lowest jobless rate in March, 6.0%, among all U.S. metropolitan areas with populations of 1 million or more, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. New Orleans had also posted the lowest unemployment rate among large metros in February.

Oklahoma City posted the second-lowest unemployment rate among large metropolitan areas in March at 6.1%.

Detroit registered the highest unemployment rate among large areas in March at 15.5%. The Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario area in Southern California reported the next-highest at 15.0%.

Among metropolitan areas of all sizes, three areas in California reported the three highest jobless rates. They were El Centro, 27.0%; Merced, 22.1%; and Yuba City, 21.7%.

The Houma-Bayou Cane-Thibodaux area in Louisiana registered the lowest unemployment rate among metropolitan areas of all sizes at 4.6%.
