New Orleans posts lowest jobless rate

The New Orleans-Metairie-Kenner area in Louisiana recorded the lowest jobless rate in April, 5.3%, among metropolitan areas with populations of 1 million or more, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. This was the third month in a row New Orleans posted the lowest unemployment rate among large areas. Oklahoma City and San Antonio reported the second-lowest rates at 5.4% each.

The Detroit area reported the highest unemployment rate among large metropolitan areas in April at 13.6%. It was followed by the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario area in Southern California at 12.6%.

Among metropolitan areas of all sizes, El Centro CA posted the highest jobless rate at 26.9%. Iowa City IA registered the lowest at 3.2%.
