New Jersey staffing firm owners arrested, accused of hiding $30 million

February 05, 2015

A New Jersey husband and wife who own staffing firms were arrested Wednesday on suspicion of hiding more than $30 million in income and underpaying workers’ compensation premiums from 2009 through 2013, the Office of the New Jersey Attorney General reported.

The couple arrested were Andres Minaya, 48, and Jenny Minaya, 29, both of Milltown, N.J., according to the office. They owned staffing companies doing business as Olympus Management Service, Atlantis Personnel and other names.

Authorities issued search warrants at the Minayas’ offices including AM Professional Services, a tax preparation company allegedly owned by the Minayas, according to the Attorney General's office. In addition, the Office of Insurance Fraud Prosecutor has frozen personal and corporate bank accounts controlled by the couple.

“The defendants had a legal responsibility to provide adequate and lawful workers’ compensation coverage for employees,” said Acting Attorney General Hoffman. “Not only did they allegedly steal millions from the United States and New Jersey taxpayers, they failed to pay for the appropriate protections for their employees.”

The Minayas were each charged with first-degree financial facilitation of criminal activity, according to the office. Andres Minaya was also charged with second-degree insurance fraud and filing a false return.

Authorities also arrested Randy Colon, 34, of Somerset, N.J., who allegedly purchased Olympus Management from Andrew Minaya, according to the office. Colon is the Minayas’ nephew and faces a charge of second-degree insurance fraud.

The investigation began when the case was referred to authorities by Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, which had conducted an audit of the Minayas’ staffing company.

First-degree crimes carry sentences of up to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $200,000.
