New England area posts highest jobless rate

The Providence-Fall River-Warwick area in Rhode Island and Massachusetts posted the highest unemployment rate in January, 10.3 percent, among all large metropolitan areas with populations of 1 million or more, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

The Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos area in Texas posted the lowest jobless rate among large metropolitan areas at 4.7 percent.

Among metropolitan areas of all sizes, the Yuma, Ariz., area posted the highest jobless rate at 26.1 percent in January. El Centro, Calif., followed with an unemployment rate of 22.0 percent. Midland, Texas, posted the lowest unemployment rates at 2.9 percent.
