New England area posts highest jobless rate

The Providence-Fall River-Warwick area in Rhode Island and Massachusetts posted the highest unemployment rate in December, 9.2 percent, among all large metropolitan areas with populations of 1 million or more, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

The Minneapolis/St. Paul/Bloomington, Minn.-Wis., area posted the lowest jobless rate among large metropolitan areas at 4.3 percent.

Among metropolitan areas of all sizes, the Yuma, Ariz., area posted the highest jobless rate at 27.1 percent in December. El Centro, Calif., followed with an unemployment rate of 22.5 percent. Bismarck, N.D.; Logan, Utah-Idaho; and Midland, Texas, posted the lowest unemployment rates at 2.8 percent each.
