Netherlands – Young people view summer work as an important step in their careers

10 July 2014

Six out of ten young people see holiday work as an important first step in their career and no longer simply use the break to earn extra money. That is according to Student Work, the biggest Dutch employment agency for young people who asked 1,157 young people about their motivation for looking for a summer job.

Four in ten respondents (40.9%) cited work experience as the main reason for summer employment while 19% hoped that a good performance would help them to gain a permanent position. Just over a quarter of respondents said their main aim was to earn quick money while only 3.3% said that they too for a summer job to pass the time.

However, there was a difference between male and female respondents with women more likely than men to prioritise future employment opportunities over the need for quick money over the summer.

"The study confirms a trend that we see for a few years in our candidates," said Ineke Kooistra, CEO of Young Capital, the organisation behind Student Work. "The youth of today are very conscious about their future employment opportunities. Therefore, they increasingly choose functions and short term roles that stand out their resumes, including customer contact employee or administrative assistant.
