Employers considering new college graduates for job openings seek leaders who can work as part of a team, according to a survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers.
Participants in NACE's Job Outlook 2016 survey were asked which attributes —beyond grade point average — they look for on a candidate's resume; 80.1% said they look for evidence of leadership skills on the candidate's resume and more than three-quarters cited the importance of teamwork skills.
The top 10 attributes employers seek on a candidate’s resume:
- Leadership: 80.1%
- Ability to work in a team: 78.9%
- Communication skills (written): 70.2%
- Problem-solving skills: 70.2%
- Communication skills (verbal): 68.9%
- Strong work ethic: 68.9%
- Initiative: 65.8%
- Analytical/qualitative skills: 62.7%
- Flexibility/adaptability: 60.9%
- Technical skills: 59.6%
The survey included 201 employers who were members of NACE. Data for the Job Outlook 2016 survey was collected from Aug. 5 through Sept. 13, 2015.
