Memphis area posts highest jobless rate

The Memphis, Tenn., metropolitan area posted the highest unemployment rate in January, 7.9%, among all large metropolitan areas with populations of 1 million or more, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

The lowest jobless rate among large metropolitan areas in January was found in the Salt Lake City area at 3.6%.

Among metropolitan areas of all sizes, El Centro, Calif., posted the highest jobless rate in January at 21.3%, followed by Yuma, Ariz., at 19.8%.

Midland, Texas, posted the lowest jobless rate among metropolitan areas of all sizes at 2.6%.
