Memphis area posts highest jobless rate

The Memphis, Tenn., metropolitan area posted the highest unemployment rate in December, 7.6%, among all large metropolitan areas with populations of 1 million or more, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

The lowest jobless rate among large metropolitan areas in December was found in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area at 3.3%.

Among metropolitan areas of all sizes, Yuma, Ariz., posted the highest jobless rate in December at 22.1%, followed by El Centro, Calif., at 21.0%.

Midland, Texas, posted the lowest jobless rate among metropolitan areas of all sizes at 2.1%.
