Mass layoffs rise in February

Mass layoffs rose in February, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of mass layoff events — where 50 or more workers are laid off from a single workplace — rose 7.1 percent from the previous month.

Mass layoffs increased to 1,422 in February from 1,328 in January.

Initial claims for mass layoffs inched up 1.1 percent to 135,468 in February, compared with 134,026 in January.

“Temporary help services” was the industry with the most initial claims due to mass layoff events in February with 7,564 initial claims, according to numbers that were not seasonally adjusted. “School and employee bus transportation” followed with 2,592.
