Mass layoffs increase in June

Mass layoffs rose in June to 1,647, up by 235, or 16.6%, from May, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The number of initial claims for unemployment insurance resulting from mass layoffs rose by 9,749, or 7.2%, in June to 145,538.

Mass layoff actions involve at least 50 workers from a single workplace.

The industry with the most initial claims for unemployment insurance related to mass layoffs was elementary and secondary schools with 31,849 initial claims on a non-seasonally adjusted basis.

In June, the temporary help services industry category reported 7,363 initial claims related to mass layoffs on a non-seasonally adjusted basis. Professional employer organizations reported 1,781 initial claims.
