Mass layoffs fall in April

May 22, 2013

Mass layoffs fell in April, continuing a decline that began in February, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of mass layoff events — where 50 or more workers are laid off from a single workplace — fell 10.3 percent from the previous month.

Initial unemployment insurance claims from mass layoffs fell 8.7 percent in April from the previous month.

“School and employee bus transportation” was the industry with the most initial claims due to mass layoff events in April with 10,210 initial claims, according to numbers that were not seasonally adjusted. “Temporary help services” followed with 8,778 claims.

The BLS will discontinue reporting on mass layoffs effective with the May 2013 data to be issued June 21 because of federal spending cuts prompted by sequestration.
