Mass layoffs down in January; Temp help files most claims

Mass layoffs declined in January, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of mass layoff events — where 50 or more workers are laid off from a single workplace — fell 12.0 percent from the previous month.

Mass layoffs slipped to 1,328 in January from 1,509 in December.

Initial claims for mass layoffs fell 2.8 percent to 134,026 in January, compared with 137,839 in December.

“Temporary help services” was the industry with the most initial claims due to mass layoff events in January with 14,937 initial claims, according to numbers that were not seasonally adjusted. “Highway, street, and bridge construction” was second with 3,772 and “Discount department stores” followed, with 3,440 initial claims.
