Mass layoffs dip in March; Bureau to cease reporting

April 23, 2013

Mass layoffs fell in March compared to the previous month, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of mass layoff events — where 50 or more workers are laid off from a single workplace — fell 6.0 percent from the previous month.

Initial claims for mass layoffs fell 5.6 percent in March from the previous month.

“School and employee bus transportation” was the industry with the most initial claims due to mass layoff events in March with 11,169 initial claims, according to numbers that were not seasonally adjusted.

The BLS also announced it will discontinue reporting on mass layoffs effective with the May 2013 data because of across-the-board federal spending cuts because of sequestration.
