Mass layoffs decline in April

Employers took 1,308 mass layoff actions in April, down 16.7% from March, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of initial unemployment claims associated with mass layoff actions fell 14.8% in April to 133,914.

The industry with the highest number of initial unemployment claims from mass layoffs was temporary help services at 11,280 in April. It was followed by school and employee bus transportation at 6,258.

A mass layoff action involves at least 50 workers from a single workplace.
