Mass layoff actions rise

Employers took 1,320 mass layoff actions in October, up from 1,271 in September, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. The number of initial unemployment claims associated with the mass layoffs rose 6.6% to 131,780 in October from 123,656 in the previous month. A mass layoff action involves at least 50 workers from a single workplace.

The industry with the most initial unemployment claims from mass layoffs was light truck and utility vehicle manufacturing at 7,162. It was followed by temporary help services at 6,118.
