Mass layoff actions fall

The number of mass layoff actions fell in August to 1,189 from 1,221 in July, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of initial unemployment claims associated with mass layoffs was 118,120, down 5.4% from 124,835 in July. A mass layoff action involves at least 50 workers from a single workplace.

The industry with the most initial unemployment claims from mass layoff actions was temporary help services with 8,621, according to the BLS. It was followed by school and employee bus transportation at 5,134 and real estate credit with 5,126.
